Developing reference roles
A starting point for discussing scope, evidence and review with a professional body.
What it is
Reference roles describe proposed responsibilities and competencies for a discipline and jurisdiction. Archetype labels distinguish legacy, hybrid and future-ready models; a future-ready label is a proposal about practice, not a prediction or an assessment of a person.
Professional bodies can contribute domain expertise, sources and reviewers.
Organisation leaders can examine how the reference relates to their work.
Practitioners can use the reference to frame questions for a manager, mentor or educator.
What a professional body can contribute
- Discipline expertise and a clear account of the work the profile should describe.
- Relevant sources, with permission to use the material where required.
- Participants who can review the proposed relationships and record their judgements.
- A plan for maintaining the profile as practice and source material change.
What needs to be agreed
- The intended audience, discipline, jurisdiction and profile scope.
- The supporting evidence, review process and responsibility for decisions.
- The development schedule, costs, attribution and publication arrangements.
- The permitted uses and any required outputs or integrations.
